7 Wonders

I’ve always been a big fan of all things related to ancient history and civilizations. One of the things that had always interested me as a kid was the Seven Wonders of the world. So when it was announced a while back that there would be a poll to determine the new seven wonders, it was pretty exciting news for me.

For those not in the know, the original seven wonders were also known as the seven wonders of the ancient world. Six of the original seven have fallen, with only the Great Pyramids of Egypt still standing. The committee behind this new initiative has assured that the Pyramids will not lose it’s status as a “wonder” and will remain as the eighth wonder. So what did the world decide as the new seven wonders?

  • The Great Wall of China
  • The Taj Mahal
  • Petra of Jordan
  • The Roman Colosseum
  • Machu Picchu of Mexico
  • Chichen Itza
  • Christ Redeemer in Rio

I’m in agreement with most of the picks, but there are some who felt there were other notables more worthy of the list, in particular, Stonehenge. I guess that raises the question as to what defines a “world wonder”; is it simply popularity? Does it have to have an extensive known history? Longevity? Complexity of the object in question or sheer size?

If you could change this list, what would you remove and what would be it’s replacement?

  1. drop the christ statue and replace it with pretty much *any* of the finalists that didnt make it and you have a one million times better list.

religion is a powerful motivator, but should have no place in how one votes for a ‘wonder of the world’.

    ignorance ftl.

  2. except the statue of liberty, eiffel tower and sydney opera house.

    those are gay too.
